How to use Lyft (with subtitles)

Lyft is a paid transportation service similar to Uber and Taxis. It can help you to get to and from vaccine clinics, the doctor’s office, or anywhere else you need to go. From now until December 31st, 2021, using the code NCOABOOSTER can cover up to $50 worth of trips for those who are older or have a disability. I will show how to use this code later in the video.

Start by downloading the Lyft app from the app store. Search “Lyft,” and it should be the first or second app to show up. You will recognize it by the pink logo. Open the app, and you will be prompted with a button that says “Get Started.” Tapping this will bring up a request for Lyft to use your location. This is necessary to use the app, so select either “Allow Once” or “Allow While Using App.” Next you will have to enter your cell phone number. You will receive a text with a number code which you must then enter into the Lyft app to verify your account. After this, you will need to enter your name, email address, and answer whether you want to receive notifications or not. Tap the three lines in the left hand corner of the screen. This is the menu. If you go under notifications, you can see some more options about your account. From here, you can verify your email address, upload your profile picture, and, most importantly, add your payment info into the app.

Unfortunately, Lyft does not accept cash payment. There is the option for Lyft cash, but this works more like credit you can use within the Lyft app. If you scroll down, you will see the option “Add Payment Method.” Select this and you can choose between online banking, paypal, or venmo. If you tap “Use another method” you can also use a credit or debit card, or a commuter benefit card.

Now that you have set up your account, you can schedule a pick up. Before this, though, you want to use the promotional code mentioned before, provided by the National Council on Aging. Go to “Menu,” and then, “Rewards,” where you can enter the code NCOABOOSTER to add $50 to your balance. Because this is a tutorial video and I am not in need of this service, I did not apply the code.

One other note: if you use a wheelchair, you can go into settings, and then turn on “Wheelchair Access” so that your driver will arrive in a wheelchair accessible vehicle.

To schedule a pick up, tap “Search Destination” and enter the address of where you want to go. You will be asked what your preferred ride type is. I put a link in the description which contains information about each ride type. Most of the time, you will most likely be using the default “Lyft” option. After selecting this, you can confirm or change the pickup address, then select “Confirm and Request.”

You will see the window of time that your driver will arrive, as well as a map which tracks where they are so you know how close they are to arriving. Once you finish the ride, you will be given the option to rate and tip the driver, depending on your satisfaction with the service. To get a ride back home, follow the same steps as before, making sure that your starting location and drop off location are accurate.
