I've been realizing lately how much baggage a song can accumulate over its lifetime, and Don't Stop Believin' is a perfect example. We've all heard this song hundreds of times, and most of those times we probably didn't choose to listen to it. It was just there, in the air somewhere. It's become a weirdly cheesy inspirational part of our atmosphere. We've built up years and years of associations and feelings around a song like this, and many of them aren't ideal. For me personally, it's next to impossible to listen to the original recording of this song without picturing a group of drunk fraternity brothers yell-singing it at the top of their lungs in a karaoke bar. And that bums me out a little. It kind of makes me feel bad for the song itself: this little helpless thing burdened with carrying all of that weight. (Side note: I don't feel bad for Journey. They're doin' just fine.)

This may sound weird, but until I started learning how to play this song, I don't think I'd ever truly listened to it. Yeah, I could sing along, and I knew the words, and I could throw my hands in the air and tilt my head back and belt the chorus and laugh about it, but I had never listened to it. I didn't realize that it's beautiful and heartbreaking and hopeful all at once. It makes me think of so many friends who are currently pursuing their artistic dreams, and how difficult that path can be. It's really something special, there's a reason it lives on.

I hope my version allows you to hear something new as well. And if not, there's always drunk karaoke :)
