STORYLINE:
The US Army's 4th Infantry Division began formal hearings on Tuesday in the Iraqi city of Tikrit to decide whether or not to court martial an army officer for allegedly assaulting and threatening a detained Iraqi.
Lieutenant Colonel Allen B. West of the Second Batallion 20th Field Artillery Regiment, is accused of beating Yahja Jhordi Hamoodi, pointing a loaded weapon at him, threatening to kill him and firing the weapon near him.
The assault allegedly took place on 20 August 2003.
West, his civilian attorney and military prosecutors convened on Tuesday morning for an "Article 32" hearing, which will determine whether the case against West should proceed to a formal court martial.
The hearing is expected to last two days.
