Social Media’s Role in Elections – Campaigning or Propaganda?
"These days, elections are not just fought on the ground, but also on our phone screens. Social media has become the new battleground where politicians compete for our attention.
Now earlier, campaigning meant rallies, posters, and loudspeakers in every street. But today, a single trending hashtag can make more noise than ten rallies combined. One viral meme can reach millions faster than a political speech on stage.
But here’s the tricky part. Social media is a double-edged sword. On one side, it helps leaders connect directly with people. On the other, it is also used for propaganda — spreading half-truths, fake news, or exaggerated claims just to influence voters’ minds.
Think about it — during elections, suddenly every candidate looks like a hero online. Perfect photos, inspiring videos, and promises everywhere. It almost feels like everyone is applying for a movie role! But behind the scenes, big teams are working day and night, planning posts, targeting ads, and even using data to know exactly what to show us.
The impact? Social media can actually shape opinions. People may vote based on what they see online rather than what’s happening on the ground. And once something goes viral, it’s very hard to stop, even if it’s false.
So, in simple words, social media is like a super-loud microphone in elections. It can inform, but it can also mislead. The challenge for us as citizens is to not get carried away by catchy posts or dramatic videos. Instead, we should ask: Is this fact, or just propaganda?
Because at the end of the day, elections decide our future. And that decision should come from truth, not from trending hashtags."
