In our previous tutorials, we discussed the Anatomy of Muscles of Scapular Region including the individual anatomy tutorials on the rotator cuff muscles. So, in this tutorial we have discussed all the rotator cuff muscles together. The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles within the shoulder region and these muscles help in providing dynamic stability to the shoulder joint. These muscles include the Supraspinatus, Infraspinatus, Teres Minor and Subscapularis. Our shoulder joint consists of our humeral head which is placed in a shallow glenoid cavity of the scapula. This arrangement makes this joint very mobile but in return this joint loses its stability, and we regain this stability through these rotator cuff muscles. These rotator cuff muscles lie deep to the powerful superficial muscles of the shoulder such as the Pectoralis Major, Deltoid, Trapezius and Latissimus Dorsi.
So, in this tutorial we have described the complete anatomy of these four muscles, and we have worked out to explain the origin, insertion, nerve supply or innervation, arterial or vascular supply and actions for each of these muscles.
