Why is Pakistan still struggling with poverty, debt, weak institutions, low exports and an education crisis almost 80 years after independence?
Pakistan was created in 1947 with enormous potential — a strategic location, agricultural resources, a huge population and millions of talented people.
Yet today, Pakistan faces a combination of problems that have accumulated over decades:
• Around 255 million people
• Around 25 million children out of school
• GDP per capita of roughly $1,600
• Public debt equivalent to around three-quarters of GDP
• Exports only around 10% of GDP
• Remittances equivalent to roughly 9% of GDP
• Pakistan ranked 168th out of 193 countries in the UNDP's 2025 Human Development Index
• Repeated IMF programmes and economic crises
• Low female labour-force participation
• Energy-sector problems
• Brain drain and migration
• Weak taxation and persistent fiscal deficits
But who is responsible?
Was it politicians?
The military?
The bureaucracy?
Business elites?
Landowners?
Religious leaders?
Foreign powers?
Or the generations that came to power between 1950 and 1990?
But this isn't an attack on ordinary Pakistanis.
This is the story of Pakistan's lost potential.
