AI Max for Search is designed to maximize reach, not precision (yet) in my opinion. Expect broad matches, learnings, and some frustration but it could be the next evolution of automated search campaigns once optimized and with a bit of time.

I always remember when PMax came out, the first months were horrible. After some updates from Google and machine learning the campaign type got better and better over time.

𝐀𝐈 𝐌𝐚𝐱 𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐨𝐛𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬:

1️⃣ 𝐀𝐠𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐊𝐞𝐲𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐝 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧
AI Max is broadening reach far beyond your original targeting.
Competitor Terms: Ads are triggering on competitor brand searches you didn’t target.
Generic Short-Tail Terms: 1-word queries are appearing, often low intent and less relevant. It's a "𝐁𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡 +" (Trademarked Term by Thomas lol)

2️⃣ 𝐋𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧-𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧
AI Max starts matching for additional geographic terms and location names not included in your campaign.
Example: Targeting “IT services in London” could show for “IT services in Manchester.”

3️⃣ 𝐌𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐬
Ads are showing for search queries in other languages, even if your campaign and landing pages are in English.
This could increase impressions but lead to irrelevant clicks without proper exclusions. Especially relevant in multi language countries.

4️⃣ 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐎𝐛𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 (𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓)
Click volume increases, but a higher share of irrelevant terms is observed.
Feels similar to Performance Max in its first months low efficiency before the algorithm learns.
Expect a learning curve before this can outperform traditional search campaigns.
