It is the native tongue of the Waray people, the country's fifth-largest ethnolinguistic group. As a member of the Visayan language family, it shares linguistic similarities with Cebuano and Hiligaynon but retains distinct features in vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar. Waray is one of the major regional languages in the Philippines and serves as a primary medium of communication for over three million speakers. It is also used in local media, religious practices, and literature, playing a vital role in preserving the culture and identity of the Waray people.
