Creative drumming is making a comeback, and it’s becoming more and more necessary to have techniques at your disposal to innovate onstage and in the studio. One such technique is displacements—moving the starting point of a groove or lick. This works for just about any rhythmic or melodic phrase, and can potentially produce something more interesting than the original.
In each set of examples here, you’ll notice labeling pointing to original and displaced content. Moving back and forth between the two provides a frame of reference, which helps us drummers—and the audience—get our bearings.
