The police officer looked at me with pity in his eyes and said Mr Freeman I am sorry but your daughter took her own life. I looked him dead in the eye and said Officer you have the wrong house. I have only one child. A son named Marcus. And he is very much alive. The officer shook his head and handed me a plastic bag containing a cheap burner phone and a silver cross necklace. He said She had your number saved as Dad. It was the only number in the phone. When they pulled back the sheet at the morgue my legs gave out. It was not my daughter. But looking at her dead face broke my heart more than if it had been my own flesh and blood. Because the woman lying on that cold steel table was supposed to be dead five years ago. And looking at the bruise on her neck I knew one thing for certain. She did not kill herself.
