Summer is here y’all - And that means it’s time for swim lessons!
About 3 years ago we tried lessons for Owen through the city and it was a disaster. He sat and watched the lap swim clock the ENTIRE lesson. Ugh! But a few weeks ago we took the plunge and paid for private lessons. We have a wonderful instructor who specializes in teaching kiddos with special needs. She keeps her commands short and direct and repeats them over and over. Her main goal is to teach children what to do if they fall in the pool so they can get to safety. I’ve heard about far too many autistic children who've died in drowning accidents. This breaks my heart.
There’s a lot about autism I can’t control - but I CAN try to teach my son to navigate this world and give him as many skills as possible to keep him safe. That’s my goal this summer for Owen.
Be sure to reach out to autism parents or therapists in your specific communities to find a swim instructor who might be a good fit for you. For us, the right instructor has made a big difference!
If you have any good ideas about swim lessons or water safety for special needs - Please share in the comments below!
Happy Swimming!
