LIVE: Pakistan Rattled as India Clears Dulhasti-II Project on Chenab After Indus Treaty Shift

Описание: Pakistan has reacted nervously after India approved the Dulhasti Stage-II hydropower project on the Chenab river in Jammu & Kashmir’s Kishtwar district. Islamabad has alleged that India failed to share prior technical details and has sought clarifications through the Indus Commissioners, claiming misuse of western river waters under the Indus Waters Treaty.

India, however, has firmly rejected the allegations, stating that Dulhasti Stage-II is a 260-megawatt run-of-the-river project fully permitted under the treaty. The project builds on the existing Dulhasti Stage-I infrastructure commissioned in 2007 and is part of a larger Chenab basin hydropower cascade linked to the Pakal Dul project.

The timing of the clearance has added to Pakistan’s unease. Following the Pahalgam terror attack, India put routine engagement under the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance, halting data sharing and joint mechanisms. New Delhi has signalled that water cooperation cannot continue normally amid continued cross-border terrorism and that India will now maximise its permissible use of western rivers while reviewing treaty provisions.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has reiterated that national security and development priorities will guide India’s approach.

The big questions now remain: why is Indus water critical for Pakistan, how does treaty abeyance impact Islamabad, and can India continue building projects on the Chenab within treaty limits?
