Rather than buy the rumor, sell the news, it should be called buy the uncertainty, sell the dilution of the uncertainty. With every rumor, the market is trying to price in what "could" possibly happen.

Recently we have witnessed the uncertainty around Pelosi visiting Taiwan. This uncertainty created market dynamics that held markets back. The longer the story goes on, and nothing happens, the less impactful the story becomes. If the initial move was exaggerated, a reversion to the mean is one of the possible strategies.

To be a contrarian trader, you must always understand what is being priced in(in many cases it is the uncertainty) and what will happen when this uncertainty evaporates.
