It is located on the north bank of the Forth at the spot where some say it ceases to be the River Forth and becomes the Firth of Forth. In 1813 the first steamboat started to operate out of Alloa harbour.After the improvements were made to the harbour during the 18th century, Alloa thrived as a river port through which the products of Glasgow manufacture were exported to continental Europe. The town was known for its weaving and glassmaking industries well into the 19th and early 20th centuries. Alloa was long associated with the brewing industry, with at least nine major breweries producing ales at its height. George Brown was born in Alloa on November 29, 1818, he was a Scottish born Canadian journalist, politician and one of the Fathers of Confederation. A noted Reform politician, he is best known as the founder and editor of the Toronto Globe.
