If your new house already has an existing Vivint system, then you probably have a lot of questions. You might be wondering, how do I get the pin code, is the equipment mine to keep, I accidentally tripped the alarm, how do I turn it off, or maybe you are curious about activating the service and want to know what it costs.

In this video, I answer all of those questions and more. Here is the breakdown.

Let’s start with what to do with the equipment. If you bought the house and the equipment is still here then it’s yours to keep. You can throw it away, sell the equipment on ebay, or you can use the system as the new owner.

A common question I see is can I use the equipment without the service. While you can technically use the equipment without the service, but it’s very limited. You won’t be able to use the app on your phone and there will be no monitoring.

You can arm and disarm the alarm system and it will still sound the alarm if a sensor is tripped, but don’t expect the police to show up. If you have cameras, they will continue to record but you are limited to viewing the video only from the panel.

The other limitation that is worth mentioning is how to get the PIN code. If you don’t have the PIN code from the previous owners then you might be out of luck, because Vivint won’t give you a code unless you are a customer.

That prevents you from being able to arm and disarm the alarm even without paying for the service.

You’ll need to get it from the previous owners or become a Vivint customer.

The good news is that activating the system is done all over the phone. Once it’s activated, you’ll have the PIN code, app on your phone, and it will be monitored which can help save a little bit of money on your home owners insurance. Here is the number on the screen to call to get it activated.

You’ll also save quite a bit of money by using the existing equipment. There is no install or equipment fee and there’s not even a contract, it's month to month service so you can cancel anytime. It’s one of the better deals in home security in terms of most bang for your buck.

The only thing that is required is to pay for the first month of service which starts at $29.99 for the basic plan. That covers monitoring to police, fire, medical and the app on your phone. Up to $49.99 if you have cameras that you want to be able to view from your phone and any other smart home devices connected to the system.

You can also request additional equipment if you want to add more items to it during that call.

Now if you accidentally triggered the alarm or it’s continuously beeping at your and you want it to stop AND you don’t have the pin code the best thing you can do is to remove the panel from the wall and remove the backup battery. This will completely disable the system and stop it from making any noise.

To remove the panel, just push up and out then behind the panel you’ll pull this plastic tab down and remove the battery. This will completely power it down.
