Camping during a storm is not for the inexperienced, or faint hearted, but once you have the right gear and get some experience it can give you a great challange. On this occasion storm Floris was due to hit in the early hours, bringing high winds, heavy rain and thick fog, but the calm before the storm brought some stunning weather, and it was too good of an opportunity to miss getting out for a camp. I park up in a lay-by just past the Brothers water inn on the Kirkstone pass, and within a couple of steps I'm on track and begin my hike to summit Stony cove pike, my 88th Wainwright standing at 763m. Two miles from the car to the summit, so it's a steep slog, over rivers, through bracken and over rocky terrain, the views open up quickly, Red screes, Angle tarn pikes, Ullswater and Brothers water looking majestic in the sunny weather 😀 The last half mile levels off a bit to give me some respite from the steep route, from here I lose sight of Ullswater, but gain a cracking view down towards the Kirkstone pass, Ambleside and Windermere. Approaching the summit I can see Ill Bell, Froswick and Thornthwaite crag stretched out in front of me, after tagging the summit I look around for a pitch, but the great views I had on the way up are somewhat jaded with the summits placement, so I decided to head back a couple of minutes to a memorial cairn, here the views are stunning, and perfect to pitch the tent for the night 🌙 Off comes the rucksack, and I bask in the sun for hours, just relaxing and enjoying the peace and quiet, not a soul in sight, camping perfection 😁👌 As the sun began to set the temperature dipped, surprisingly so for summertime, so up goes the Kuiu stormstar 2 and I cook up my evening meal before enjoying the amazing sunset, and getting my head down for a good night's sleep, in preparation for what I knew was heading my way in the morning. On waking the tent was getting buffered heavily by the wind, the rain followed shortly after that, and a quick peek out of the vent was met by very heavy fog! First order of the day is a good strong coffee made with the Jetboil press and breakfast. After packing up I really didn't want to get out of the tent, and rightly so, putting the tent away was hard work, and the walk back was very draining, high winds pushed me around, rain stinging my eyes, and the thick fog reduces visibility to around 20m but 40 minutes later and I was back at the car safe and sound.
A huge thankyou for all the support, it truly means the world to me,
