Military personnel stationed in Zakho in northern Iraq to oversee the operation of the Kurdish safe haven evacuated the town on Tuesday (3/9) and travelled into Turkey.
The forces, largely American troops, had been supervising operation Provide Comfort, set up by the Allies in 1991 at the end of the Gulf war to protect Iraqi Kurds.
