A set of (unsuccessful) torch igniter tests at the Hyperion Testing Facility.
During the ignition process, an oxidizer purges is performed through the igniter to cool it down and eliminate any air bubbles in the lines. Following this, a glow plug is preheated for several seconds within the igniter chamber. At the same time, both oxidizer and fuel are injected into the chamber, resulting in sustained combustion.
The test took place in april, on our own engine testing facility, cryogenic compatible and rated up to 15kN of thrust. While the tests were unsucessful the team managed to refill the LOx tanks 3 times in the span of one hour, testifying of the Testing Facility robustness regarding cryo operations.
