This video is a 10 minutes ‘playalong practise session’ of the E Minor Arpeggio (3 octaves, starting in 4th position.) It’s one of the arpeggios from the Grade 8 ABRSM syllabus.
Throughout the 10 minutes of practise I take the arpeggio apart and repeat different parts on a loop basis, ascending and descending.
I always start my daily practise with 20 minutes of scales, arpeggios, octaves, 10ths, etc, usually in the key of the piece that I’ll be working on. The piece I’m refreshing over at the minute is Kreisler’s Praeludium and Allegro which is in the key of E Minor, so I’d therefore practise components of E Minor during my daily 30 minutes warm up.
Throughout this 10 minutes practise tutorial, I focus on particular position shifts ascending and descending, in order to really isolate and fine tune the exact intonation of the pitches within the position shift. The more I memorise the shift, and focus on the tuning, the more exact the intonation and the flexibility of moving between the different positions becomes over time.
I highly recommend printing the free 4 page sheet music document which accompanies this tutorial, and include this 10 minutes warm up at the beginning of your daily violin practise session. https://docdro.id/4sGRp3v
Remember to adopt this method with every major and minor key.
If you're watching this tutorial on desktop, follow along with the scrolling sheet music at the lower half of your screen. As a rule, I recommend playing all scales without vibrato, although you will hear two paused notes at the end of a couple of sections throughout this practise where I have played vibrato unintentionally.
After initial tuning up I begin the arpeggio at a slow, steady tempo of 50 crotchet beats per minute.
