Welcome once again Llama Paw striders, walkers and explorers as I embark on another of my explorations of rural middle England. Come with me as I take a windy, wild and wet walk north from Market Harborough, in southern Leicestershire, up to Tilton on the Hill – though fields, along roads and through seemingly endless mud! We even take in a long stretch of the Midshires Way as it runs through Leicestershire!
I kick off in Market Harborough next to the Aldi/Waitrose/Lidl and head north through the streets and up Great Bowden Road, encountering a charming little church along the way. Dodging past the joggers who crowd the otherwise sleepy streets, I reach exclusive Great Bowden and pause to admire the many fine houses! Then it’s up and out of the town and onto Welham Lane for a few miles. This quiet road – often a farm track – is at least pretty solid, even if there’s a lot of puddles from the recent rains. Passing a small lake, and a few stud farms, I eventually pass through lovely little Welham: well worth a detour to visit if you’re in the area.
I keep heading north along the minor roads until I reach Cranoe – one of the smallest settlements in the region, but all the more lovely for it. From Cranoe though I take to the fields, and as I ascend the first real hill of the day get a taste of the mud and high winds that are going to characterise the rest of the walk! Sloshing through miles of muddy filth and water, and buffeted by a chilly northern wind, I make my way through the misty February landscape for a while, before at last descending onto a road once more.
From here it’s up Hallaton Road to Tugby, and its picturesque church. But this road walking is only a brief respite before heading across the fields, dodging over the hectic A47 Uppingham Road, and then it’s back into – yes you’ve guessed it – more super muddy fields. There’s a brief moment of excitement when a big navy helicopter buzzes past, but other than that hills, mud and fields continue to be the main highlights. Finally though, I come out at Tilton on the Hill, and call a halt to today’s excursions.
Once again, the majority of this hike comes with text comments only, so you can enjoy
the passing scenery and sounds of nature which surrounded me.
Naturally, if you’ve enjoyed this walk as much as I did – don’t forget to show your appreciation by giving me a like, subscribe or a share! My thanks in advance!
