Pinus grows from the equator to the Arctic Circel under the most bizarre conditions. These trees will grow even in extremely dry situations in poor soil. Familliar images are of pines on rocky hillsides in regions where it is cold all year or on bare cliffs and in sandy dunes battered every day by offshore winds. Generally speaking, Pinus produces large trees that can live for up to five hundred years. There is a broad selection of species available for smaller gardens, as well cultivars that range from shrub to dwarf forms.
