The Story (Iconography)
The painting depicts a classic biblical scene from the Gospel of Matthew. Following the birth of Jesus, three "Magi" (wise men or kings) from the East follow a miraculous star to Bethlehem to honor the newborn "King of the Jews."
The Three Kings: Traditionally, they represent the three known continents (Europe, Asia, and Africa) and the three stages of man (youth, maturity, and old age). In this image, you see the eldest king kneeling directly before the Christ Child, offering a golden vessel.
The Holy Family: The Virgin Mary holds the infant Jesus, who reaches out toward the gift, symbolizing his acceptance of his earthly mission. Joseph is visible in the background, watching the scene.
