1/4 Bar Fels Naptha
1/4 C Borax
1/4 C Washing Soda
1 C Hot water
To use: add 1 Tablespoon directly with the laundry, NOT in the “detergent compartment”. Use this method with ALL washing machine types.
It is paramount to follow the directions carefully. Not doing so will result in a sub par product that does not fully dissolve in the wash. I also want to note that this is an excellent product for dirty laundry!
Step 1: In a medium heavy saucepan put water on over high heat. While that is heating, mix the borax and washing soda together in a bowl, mixing well, set aside.
Step 2: Grate the Fels Naptha. If you are going to do a full bar for a two quart batch you may want to use a food processor, otherwise you can do it by hand with a grater or peeler.
Step 3: Add the grated soap to the water in the saucepan, stirring almost constantly. Reduce the heat to medium. It will take about 10 minutes for the soap to completely dissolve. If it takes longer, your heat wasn’t high enough. Another option is to melt the soap without water over low heat, then add the water to it. Either way, do NOT let this boil over. You’ll have an unholy sudsy mess to contend with! It should be a rolling simmer, that you stir constantly, but does not foam heavily or seems to “creep up” the saucepan.
Step 4: Once the soap is completely melted, remove the pan from the heat and add in the borax and washing soda. Stirring constantly until the powders are completely dissolved should take about 3-5 minutes. Do not under-mix or your soap texture will be very grainy rather than smooth. You can feel the “graininess” on the bottom of the pan, once you can’t feel it, it is incorporated fully.
Step 5: Pour the liquid into your mason jar. For larger batches pour equally into canning jars of equal sizes.
Step 6: Add just enough water to bring the contents up to the “shoulders” or rounded parts of the jar leaving about an inch or so of headspace.
Step 7: Put the lid on the jar(s) and turn them UPSIDE DOWN and let sit a few hours, about 4 hours. The reason for this is that the soap is going to separate into layers while it is resting and sometimes will form crystals on the bottom. Rather than waste these trying to scrape them off, we can incorporate them in the next step. Also, if you let this sit longer than 4 hours, say overnight, it will have a slightly grainier texture.
Step 8: There are a few ways to do this next step, depending on what equipment you have. If you have a bullet blender you can attach it to your mason jar and mix until smooth and creamy. If you have an immersion or stick blender you can use that or completely empty jar of contents into a non porous mixing bowl and use a hand mixture to achieve a smooth and creamy finished product. Return to mason jar, cover, and store until needed. Note that it will have the same look and consistency of mayonnaise, so make sure to label!
To Use: Add 1 Tablespoon to load of laundry in any type of machine and any temperature of water. Do NOT add the soap to the “detergent compartment” but directly with the dirty clothes.
IMPORTANT INFO: Do not use substitute or add other ingredients. I have heard that it creates an unstable product that causes jars to explode. This can be stored indefinitely. It does become slightly firmer but still melts in water, hot or cold. Since the soaps have been completely dissolved in the recipe, it leaves no residue on your clothing like many homemade detergents. I have not had any issue with fading clothes due to use.
