Hello! On this episode of Afternoon Jams I have some fun exploring some bluesy sounds using the phrygian mode on my bridge pick up. I had been wandering around downtown a few weeks back, and found myself wrapped up in my thoughts. This is when I realized I don't often play on my bridge pick up, and thought it would be cool to explore some blues tones with my overdrive and distortion.
The chord progression to this jam is, on the surface, a relatively easy progression to play. I incorporate tritone substitution into my playing here, which adds a really nice twang and uniqueness to the tone. Tritone theory is going to be covered in some later episodes, but long story short - tritone works because the 3rd & 7th notes are switched, so those tones work with the ears.
On this week's episode of Intro To Improvising, I discuss the theory of using the phrygian mode, as well as the benefits of this mode. I found this mode to work exceptionally well with blues. Don't forget to tune in this Thursday.
