Most people won't walk more than about 400 metres to get to public transport. That means if you rely on people getting to train stations on foot, your catchment is going to be pretty limited. This is why metro stops in many cities are about 1000 metres apart.
If you rely on passengers arriving by car, you need to build huge car parks, or large kiss and drive areas - and the entire surrounding area will be swamped by vehicle traffic during the rush hours.
Bikes can dramatically increase the catchment area for public transport operators, and they can do so without requiring great chunks of land to be set aside for free parking. However, one thing many commuters would like is a secure place to lock their bike up whilst they are at work. Sydney offers bike lockers at some locations, but they only enable a tiny number of people to ride to a station or wharf and securely park their bike. Perth does it differently, with large bike shelters at many train stations. You have to swipe your train pass to get in and out of the shelter, and they look reasonably secure.
