This Japanese single malt should be smooth and malty!
This is one of Nikka Whisky’s core malt products, with the other two being the Yoichi and Taketsuru. It’s a single malt from the Miyagikyo distillery, which aims to make lightly peated or unpeated malt and grain whisky. The Yoichi Distillery makes peated and heavily peated whiskey, while the Taketsuru is a blend of the two.
This whiskey should therefore be on the lighter side, with more of the malt character shining through instead of smoke.
It comes in at 43% ABV, but doesn’t have a lot of information about its age statement, or if it’s been chill filtered or had colour added, so let’s get into the tasting notes!
Make sure to check back for my reviews of the Nikka Yoichi and Nikka Taketsuru whiskies!
Nikka Miyagikyo Single Malt Whisky Tasting notes
Nose
There's some nicely rounded vanilla, and then some woody oak influence with a touchof fruity red berries, but overall, it's a light, sweet and slightly herbal malty nose
Palate
There's some oaky malt up front on the palate, with some red berries, red apple, and a little bit of ginger spice. There's some lemon and lime peel, with some meltd brown sugar, but overall, quite light.
Finish
The vanilla and fruit fade pretty quickly, with a touch of peat smoke lingering on after a breath.
Overall, this is a decent whiskey, which gives you the sense of what the Miyagikyo distillery is making, but I think it's a bit overpriced in international markets for what it is, so unless you find it at a decent price, you might end up disappointed.

I'm a total whiskey nerd and this channel is all about Whiskey, Whisky, Bourbon, Rye, Pot Still Whiskey and Single Malt Whiskey. I'm always on the hunt for the best whiskey and love making whiskey review videos. My passion is for Irish whiskey, but I'm open to looking for the best Bourbon or the best scotch too!
I'm an Irishman, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying whiskeys from all around the world, from Kentucky bourbon to Japanese single malts. I also love making cocktails, especially whiskey cocktails (or whisky cocktails) and really enjoy taking a classic recipe and adding my own twist to it, or making simple, 3 ingredient cocktails
