Pollination is the process by which pollen is transferred from the male part of a flower (called the anther) to the female part of a flower (called the stigma). This process is essential for fertilization in plants, which leads to the production of seeds and fruit.
There are two main types of pollination:
1. Self-pollination – when pollen from a flower lands on the stigma of the same flower or another flower on the same plant.
2. Cross-pollination – when pollen is transferred from one flower to a different plant of the same species.
Pollination can happen in different ways:
By wind (like in grasses and some trees)
By water
By animals such as bees, butterflies, birds, and bats – these are called pollinators.
Pollination is very important because it helps plants reproduce, which provides us with food, oxygen, and a healthy ecosystem.
