Trailing U-S Republican presidential candidate Bob Dole took his campaign to the fertile central valley of California on Saturday.
Dole hopes his message about Clinton's character rings true with Californians' so he can cash in on the political windfall from America's most populated state.
In Selma, California, the streets took on the character of an old fashioned political rally, as brass marching bands welcomed Republican presidential candidate Bob Dole.
Dole spent Saturday in delegate rich California, hammering away at Presidential Clinton's character.
The Republican presidential candidate drew crowds, but not huge ones in this traditional Republican stronghold in California.
He hopes his message on the corruption in the Clinton administration will sway voters to him in a state where he is behind in the opinion polls.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"And we are going to win in this state because we believe the issues are on our side, and I believe I candidate you can trust and someone who can keep his word, and when that happens we will win, and I see a couple of Clinton/Gore signs, they'll get the tax cut too, you'll be taken care off.

Dole then rolled his campaign north to Merced where he continued his message.
With the election just over a week away Bob Dole knows he has to close the gap and fast, so he has increased the intensity of the character issue.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Let me thank you for being here, we're going to have a big, big surprise party on November five. I hope you can come.

Dole aides say his campaign has spent about two million dollars on advertising since the push to win California was announced.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"And we will carry the state of California and its 54 electoral votes."

In a year where the dirty campaign has become very unpopular with many voters, for some Republican voters the message of character is on their minds, but not necessarily their lips.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Q: According to opinion polls Bill Clinton is winning the women's vote in America, can you understand why?
"No I certainly I certainly can't. He's not getting this women's vote, and actually, no that's a negative remark I won't say it, but I'll think it."
SUPER CAPTION: Vox Pop
But clearly Dole's message on character is having some effect, at least on some:
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Well, I feel that Clinton is an adulterer, a liar, a cheat and a few other things and its sad that the United States has this man representing us. "
SUPER CAPTION: Vox Pop
President Clinton is not taking California for granted, he heads there next week.
