"The triplex locomotive was intended to use the considerable weight of the tender to increase the hauling power of big locomotives. This did not end well, because it was very difficult to generate enough steam to supply three sets of driving apparatus, and because the weight of the tender was reduced as coal and water were used. How to differentiate a triplex from a steam tender locomotive? The former has three driving systems, rather than two."

"The Johnston Type D 16-wheelers were built in New Zealand from 1910 onwards. They were designed to replace a team of horses for logging, and the weight on each axle on the wooden rails was supposed to be one ton only; the total weight was 16.25 tons, so that's pretty close. The design, with four powered bogies, was built under a Patent issued in 1909. It resembled a Shay locomotive in having a vertical engine, but here the engine was in the centre of the locomotive, and the drive shafts and the four universal joints required were more tidily placed between the frames."

"The 6-stage forward turbine developed 2000 hp at 6800rpm. The reverse turbine had 3 stages. Delivered to the LVA (Locomotive Testing Plant) in 1928. Withdrawn after being hit by a bomb in 1940."

"This 2-6-2 tank engine was built at Winterthur by the Swiss Locomotive and Machine company at the end of 1927, to the design of Mr Buchli, their chief engineer."

"The go-ahead management of the LBE brought heavy passenger traffic, and in 1936 the Chief mechanical engineer, Paul Mauck, began planning a new design of locomotive with the firm of Henschel & Sohn. This was to be a fast streamline tank locomotive suitable for operation in either direction, with steam-motors individually powering the three driving axles. The leading and rear driving axles were to be driven by two motors on the left of the engine, with the mid axle being driven by a motor on the right. The 1-C-h2 G6 goods locomotive No 71, dating back to 1913, was selected for conversion to the new scheme."
