Barbara Brandon-Croft made history as the first Black woman cartoonist to be nationally syndicated in the mainstream press. Her groundbreaking comic strip Where I’m Coming From, which debuted in the Detroit Free Press in 1989 and was later syndicated by Universal Press Syndicate, gave voice to Black women’s thoughts, fears, joys, and frustrations for over a decade.
In this powerful and deeply personal interview, Brandon-Croft shares how her father, legendary cartoonist Brumsic Brandon Jr., influenced her journey, how she developed the characters in her strip, and the challenges she faced breaking into a white male-dominated industry. She also reflects on the role of art in social change, and the power of giving Black women a platform to speak their truth.
