Basant Control Room Established for Safe Kite Flying | CM Maryam Nawaz Initiative for Public Safety
Control Room Established for Safe Festivities the Cultural Event of Basant 2026. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Announced that a control room has been set up in Lahore to ensure a safe Basant celebration, enabling effective monitoring, coordination, and rapid response to any incidents.
Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif urged citizens to strictly observe safety precautions during Basant celebrations, while thanking the public for the overwhelming response to the festival’s revival in Lahore.
The chief minister said Basant had been permitted only in Lahore on February 6, 7 and 8 under a pilot project, while kite-flying remained banned across the rest of Punjab. She said the public response had exceeded expectations and that the possibility of extending the festival to other cities would be considered after evaluating the success of the pilot phase. Describing Basant as a cherished cultural tradition of Punjab, Maryam Nawaz called on citizens to celebrate with enthusiasm while prioritising their own safety and that of others. She said all relevant departments had worked in close coordination to make the festival as safe and well-managed as possible in the provincial capital.
The chief minister announced free travel during Basant on 419 buses, metro bus services, the Orange Line train and 6,000 Yango rickshaws. She added that more than 700,000 motorcycles in Lahore had been fitted with safety rods, while free safety rod installation camps had been established across the city.
Outlining strict kite specifications, she said the permitted kite size would be 35×30 inches and spool size 40×34 inches, with only cotton string comprising nine threads allowed. The use of metallic wire, chemical string or other prohibited materials would invite strict legal action. She added that kites and string could be sourced from outside Lahore if required to meet demand. Maryam Nawaz said kite-flying would be prohibited in civil aviation areas and that only registered manufacturers, sellers, traders and associations would be allowed to supply QR code–embedded kites and string. She said thermal drone surveillance was being conducted across all areas, including at night, with real-time monitoring in place.
