The State Hermitage Museum is a museum of art and culture in Saint Petersburg, Russia, and holds the largest collection of paintings in the world. It was founded in 1764 when Empress Catherine the Great acquired a collection of paintings from the Berlin merchant Johann Ernst Gotzkowsky.
The Hermitage is famous for its collection of European art. The artwork comes from many periods, ranging from the Middle Ages to the modern day. It contains many famous masterpieces from Renaissance Italian and Baroque Dutch, Flemish, and French painters.
