In 1967, during the height of his boxing career, Muhammad Ali took a courageous, controversial stand against his induction to the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. His refusal to participate in the entrenched war effort was a result of the United States’ refusal to rectify diplomatic relations with the oppressed African American community. Consequently, Ali’s protest stirred domestic debates over the U.S.’s intervention in the Vietnam War conflict, effectively transforming the rhetoric against the U.S.’s efforts abroad.
