Today - IS SHE PRETTY, IS SHE HUNGRY?

The music video from the Bold Queens album Music for Clown Parties wraps the distorted drag star in an universe of altered states.

Together they are PRETTY HUNGRY

Instagram icon – London club kid – Berlin fashion muse – makeup collaborator with the legendary musician Bjork – There are many places you may have seen distorted drag artist HUNGRY…but just who is this innovate and supernaturally fabulous creature?

WHO IS HUNGRY?

Birthed in Berlin in 2014, Hungry’s name was inspired by frequently forgetting to eat, too busy being consumed by the creative process…

Far removed from the culturally progressive drag superstar known today, HUNGRY – created and portrayed by Johannes Jaruraak – was brought up in a small town in Bavaria, where nothing much queer or creative happened around her.

HUNGRY’S HERSTORY

She is of Thai and German heritage, and tries to embrace and explore the Thai culture given from her father’s side. Although she’s only visited and never lived there, she discovers something new, like a cultural aspect or tradition with every journey to Thailand. Though she feels more connected to Thai than German/Bavarian culture, overall Hungry doesn’t feel like she truly fits into either!

HUNGRY BEGINNINGS

Having always loved being a hands-on creative, forever drawing, painting, sewing, and constructing (she designs and crafts many of her own garments and accessories) Hungry moved to Berlin after finishing school to pursue a fashion degree. This was where her drag character slowly started to creep out from the imaginary realms into existence…

While growing up, Hungry was a Church altar boy with dyed green hair!

NOT QUITE HUNGRY YET…

It was her friend and tattoo artist, Berlin based Milena Kirsche, who first put her in what Hungry describes as a ‘pretty drag’ and Hungry found she enjoyed the specific type of attention received by looking feminine and glam. However, when trying to recreate it on her own later she admits to failing miserably, as back then she didn’t want to invest all the money and effort that goes into drag! It would be another six months until Hungry reappeared, and her unique style began to emerge.

LIGHTHEADED WITH ALL THIS TALENT!

Hungry’s studies in fashion, aside from engrossing her so extensively she’d skip meals, she was producing more abstract, avant-garde looks, and quickly it became apparent she could put these to good use by wearing them herself. She began to mix up her makeup, and when combined with the androgynous couture outfits she constructed, early concepts for the ‘Hungry’ aesthetic started taking shape.

The tattoo on her chest is of a seven year old’s jaw. She thinks teeth and anatomy are pretty!

A KINDRED CLUBKID SPIRIT…

While studying, Hungry would also discover she identified with alternative fashion pioneer and performance artist Leigh Bowery. Known for his outrageous, provocative guises, she found a link between Leigh’s work and her own; she too was creating pieces which she had no desire in becoming commercially available, because only she had the individual qualities required to execute them the right way!

AN APPETITE FOR MORE

Soon, Hungry was incorporating even more exciting elements to her drag, complimenting her makeup with facial accessories, head pieces, distorted lines and next level illusions. With this, her fantastical, futuristic artistry transcended to whole new dimensions. Becoming a drag artist was clearly the perfect way to combine all of her talents into one centralised medium!

GETTING HUNGRY?

Self-describing her unique aesthetic as “DISTORTED DRAG” Hungry’s look gives the audience “a glimpse into an alternate reality, in which a human body was forced to adapt to new surroundings.”

Hungry will dismiss looks very quickly just because they are “old” to her!
