The parents of Major Swathi Shantha Kumar, an Indian Army officer from Bengaluru serving with the UN Mission in South Sudan, expressed pride and joy after she won the UN Secretary-General’s Award 2025 for gender-inclusive peacekeeping.
Calling it a proud moment for the family and the country, her father said he was “on cloud nine” and stressed the importance of encouraging women. Her mother recalled how Swathi was an all-rounder since childhood and how the family ultimately supported her decision to join the Army.
According to the United Nations, Major Swathi’s team has set a strong example for future peacekeeping missions by demonstrating how gender-inclusive leadership helps build trust and strengthens long-term peace in fragile regions.
