Эквиваленты модальных глаголов
Can do = to be able to do (быть в состоянии делать)
Present: AM / IS / ARE ABLE TO DO smth.
I’m able to do it myself = I can do it myself. -
Я сам могу это сделать.
He’s able to help you. = He can help you. –
Oн в состоянии (может) тебе помочь.
We’re able to go there = We can go there. –
Мы в состоянии туда пойти.
Past: WAS / WERE ABLE TO DO smth.
We were able to win the game = We could win the game –
Мы были в состоянии (могли) выиграть игру.
He was able to pass the exam = He could pass the exam –
Он мог (был в состоянии) сдать экзамен.
Future: WILL BE ABLE TO DO smth.
We’ll be able to finish the work in time = We can finish the work in time -
Мы будем в состоянии (сможем) закончить работу вовремя.
He’ll (he will) be able to come to the party tomorrow = He can come to the party tomorrow. –
Он сможет прийти на вечеринку завтра.
