Laser Photo Trigger - Multicolored Coronet

Описание: This tutorial is a variation of our previous one - “Milk Drop”. The great difference is that now we are using a laser photo trigger instead of Triggertrap motion sensor.

By the way, the laser sensor is much more precise and easier to handle. It costs a little more, but it's worth it.

Hands-on…

For this shot, you need some fairly basic equipment and some fundamental knowledge of photography. First of all, you must improvise a consistent way to repeat the action precisely so the
drop will fall always in the same place. You don't really need a complicated device, as we did. Just hang a plastic bag with a tiny hole to allow the drops to fall regularly in the exact same place and it will do the job. In our case, since we do a lot of tests with drops, we built such a gadget, in order to have a comfortable setting at any time we do testing.

You will also need a speed flash, set in manual mode, at reduced power, 1/32s, in order to shorten the flash duration – so you will be able to freeze all details. The camera needs to be set in 2 or 3 seconds, in manual mode. That is enough time to press the shutter and release the drop, while the sensor activates the flash. By the time the shutter closes, you already have the shot. Because of such a long exposure time, you must work in a semi-dark ambient. To focus, you will need some sort of continuous light to help you see and focus on the first drop while setting up. Then, it has to be turned off, as soon as you are ready to expose.

Finally, to practice high-speed photography, you must have a trigger to control the timing in milliseconds. It will ad precision and save you a lot of time. Although this technique has to do with a lot of trying and error, the right equipment comes in handy.

For this video, we chose a “laser photo trigger” just for its precision and practicality. There are a lot of types of laser sensors in the market so you can choose the one that fits your budget. They all have common features - an emitter and a receiver of a laser beam. When aligned and activated, they detect everything that interrupts
them. In addition, they all have millisecond delay adjustments that enable you to choose the right timing for the effect needed, as shown in the sequence o the milk drop shown in our video.
