On March 2, 2026, Ukraine's 47th Mechanized Brigade launched a combined-arms breach against Russia's heavily fortified "Southern Lock" defensive complex south of Tokmak in Zaporizhzhia Oblast. The fortress featured three rings of dragon's teeth, thousands of mines, reinforced bunkers, and overlapping fields of fire from AGS-17 grenade launchers manned by elements of the 42nd Motor Rifle Division. Russian commanders considered it impenetrable. They were wrong. Using a ninety-minute artillery preparation, Bradley-mounted mine plows, and a daring flanking maneuver through marshy terrain the Russians had classified as impassable, Ukrainian forces breached all three defensive rings in nine hours. Russian losses included seventeen armored vehicles destroyed, an estimated two hundred personnel casualties, and a battalion commander captured with his entire staff. The breach opened a three-kilometer gap exploited over the following seventy-two hours, reshaping the entire southern front. Full tactical breakdown by UkraineSignal.
