University Governance in Interesting Times

Описание: Benjamin Storey, Co-Director of AEI’s Center on the Future of the American University, talks with Bruce Evans, chairman of the Board of Trustees of Vanderbilt University, about stewarding a university through challenging times.

They discuss the principles Evans has followed in his tenure on Vanderbilt’s board, the respective powers and responsibilities of university trustees, chancellors, and faculty, and the need for trustee engagement in this challenging environment. Evans also describes his experience with board reform and chancellor selection, and how the clarification of bylaws can be a useful step in forestalling shared governance conflicts. He makes the case for institutional neutrality, and how expanding to become a truly national university has brough both educational benefits and political diversity to Vanderbilt.
