CITY IMPRESSIONS, Glasgow, Scotland. 4K 60fps. 3D sound all recorded at the location
“St ANDREWS IN THE SQUARE 0:28 is an 18th-century category-A-listed former church in Glasgow, Scotland, considered one of the finest classical churches in Scotland, and now Glasgow's Centre for Scottish Culture, promoting Scottish music, song and dance. The church is in St Andrew's Square, near Glasgow Cross and Glasgow Green, on the edge of the City's East End.
The church, inspired by St Martin-in-the-Fields in London, was built between 1739 and 1756 by Master Mason Mungo Naismith, and designed by Allan Dreghorn. It is the third or fourth oldest church in Glasgow, depending on criterion. The earlier two buildings were Glasgow Cathedral and the Trongate steeple. It was the first Presbyterian church built after the Reformation, and was commissioned by the city's Tobacco Lords as a demonstration of their wealth and power.
The church was enclosed by St. ANDREWS SQUARE, 1:14 built by William Hamilton between 1786 and 1787, which became fashionable homes for some of Glasgow's wealthiest merchants.
TOLBOOTH STEEPLE. 1:28 Standing at the foot of High Street is the Tolbooth Steeple, built in 1626 at what was the meeting point of the main streets of Glasgow at that time. The Steeple is all that remains of the original Tolbooth buildings
MERCHANT CITY, 1:54 ‘Candelriggs’. 4:24 ‘Wilson St.’ has been promoted and built up in recent years as a residential, shopping and leisure area, mirroring Covent Garden in the West End of London. To this end many new bars and restaurants have been established. This has been complemented with the building of prestigious new housing developments, often by restoring Victorian buildings.”
2:27 Ramshorn Kirk, Ingram St.
2:51 Mural, ‘Portrait’ of Saint MUNGO. 283 High St.
3:18 University of Strathclyde, Courtyard Gardens
3:24 University of Strathclyde, Technology and Innovation Centre
3:46 GLASGOW CATHEDRAL. The history of the cathedral is linked with that of the city. It is allegedly located where the patron saint of Glasgow, Saint Mungo, built his church. The tomb of the saint is in the lower crypt. Walter Scott's novel Rob Roy gives an account of the kirk.
Built before the Reformation from the late 12th century onwards and serving as the seat of the Bishop and later the Archbishop of Glasgow, the building is a superb example of Scottish Gothic architecture. It is also one of the few Scottish medieval churches (and the only medieval cathedral on the Scottish mainland) to have survived the Reformation not unroofed ! (The sun disappeared behind a big cloud, so I didn’t get a good shot !)
4:03 CITY OF GLASGOW COLLEGE. On 30 August 2010, the Scottish Government voted to merge the Central College, Glasgow, Glasgow Metropolitan College and the Glasgow College of Nautical Studies into one institution. Presently, City of Glasgow College is the largest college and technical institution in Scotland. The college offers up to 2,000 professional and technical courses annually from access level to masters level.
4:34 ARGYLE St. A major shopping thoroughfare.
