Cycles in the Infinite Dream is the 2026 album by the Chicago-based band REZN, released on July 24, 2026, via the Sargent House label. It follows Burden (2024) and deepens the band's sonic exploration of atmospheric psych-doom/stoner metal, placing even greater emphasis on ambient textures, psychedelic layers, and cyclical structures.
The album delves into dream states, the subconscious, and the liminal space between wakefulness and sleep. The band describes it thus: “We turned to the dream and the subconscious state as a lyrical concept and melodic theme. The pseudo-waking state is a reflection of a second existence—something you can escape to or be imprisoned by.”
Tracks like “Cloudfall” address sleep paralysis and false awakenings, featuring repetitive motifs that evoke mental loops. The album title and lyrics—touching on themes of passage, transience, devotion, vessels, impossible patterns (à la Escher), primordial threads, and black earth/fertility—reinforce concepts of infinite cycles, ego dissolution, rebirth, and the illusory nature of reality. The approach recalls the dreamlike surrealism of David Lynch: simultaneously familiar and alien.
REZN maintains their signature sound: massive, heavy riffs combined with rich ambient textures, cinematic melodies, and Rob McWilliams’s ethereal, resonant vocals (drenched in delay and reverb). The album expands this sound through a greater use of psychedelic and progressive elements; the inclusion of lap steel guitar (played by Spencer Ouellette), which adds an ethereal, cosmic quality (reminiscent of Brian Eno); and the use of synths, saxophone, flute, keyboards, rainstick, and guest strings (violin and cello on select tracks).
The result is immersive, synesthetic, and otherworldly—fusing the crushing weight of doom with celestial melodies and floating atmospheres. It is described as the band's most psychotropic work to date, maintaining intentional discipline even during its most cryptic moments.
As a very recent release (yesterday, July 24, 2026), there aren't many full reviews yet, but expectations were high following the success of Burden and the band's growing reputation in the doom/psych scene. REZN solidifies its position as creators of immersive soundscapes, evolving from previous albums into something more conceptual, atmospheric, and inter-dimensional.
In short, Cycles in the Infinite Dream is a hypnotic journey through the cycles of consciousness—perfect for those seeking dense, cinematic, and meditative psychedelic doom. I recommend listening with headphones or in a dark room for maximum immersion.
