When the then Chief Minister Jyoti Basu refused to meet them, Mamata and the victim staged a sit-in protest outside his chamber. Police eventually dragged them out of the building. Mamata famously declared that if she ever returned to Writers’ Building, she would walk in with her head held high.

Eighteen years later, that moment arrived. On 20 May 2011, Mamata Banerjee walked back into the same building—this time as the Chief Minister of West Bengal—marking the end of the Left Front’s historic rule.

The video also explores Mamata’s early life, her rise through the ranks of the Indian National Congress, her association with leaders like Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, and the challenges she faced both within the party and from the ruling Left. After years of internal conflict within Congress, she eventually formed her own party—the All India Trinamool Congress in 1997.

Her political momentum grew significantly during the Singur and Nandigram land acquisition protests, which weakened the Left’s grip on the state. These movements ultimately paved the way for her historic victory in the 2011 West Bengal Legislative Assembly Election.

Today, after more than a decade in power, Mamata Banerjee continues to dominate Bengal politics while facing strong opposition from the Bharatiya Janata Party. The bigger question now is whether Bengal will witness another political transformation, or whether “Didi” will continue to hold her ground.
