Connecting Across Cultures: Celebrating Asian Canadian Storytellers

As representation and authentic storytelling continue to be top-of-mind for creators and audiences alike, this event will bring together three Asian Canadian directors whose work depicts particular aspects of cultural or individual identity. In a conversation that will explore the power of film to connect us to one another, Domee Shi, Tiffany Hsiung, and Joyce Wong will discuss how their own lived experiences and culture informs the way they create, how they tell stories with thought and sensitivity, and how their work is received by audiences.

Tiffany Hsiung
Tiffany Hsiung is an award-winning filmmaker based in Toronto. Her debut feature-length documentary, The Apology (16), has won over a dozen international awards at festival such as Hot Docs, Busan, and Oslo. The film earned Hsiung a nomination for the Allan King Award for Excellence in Documentary from the Directors Guild of Canada. Her 2017 film, The Space We Hold, won a Peabody–Facebook Futures of Media Award for Best Interactive Documentary and a Canadian Screen Award for Best Original Interactive Production.

Domee Shi
Domee Shi was born in Chongqing, China, and grew up in Toronto. After she graduated from the animation program at Sheridan College, she began working at Pixar Animation Studios, first as a story intern and then as a story artist. Her credits include the Academy Award–winning Inside Out (15), The Good Dinosaur (15), Incredibles 2 (18), and the upcoming Toy Story 4. She wrote and directed the short film Bao (18).

Joyce Wong
Joyce Wong is an award-winning director and writer. She is an alumna of the 2008 Berlinale Talent Campus and of the 2016 TIFF Talent Lab. Her debut narrative feature, Wexford Plaza, screened at Slamdance in 2017 and received the Comcast Best Narrative Feature Award from the Center for Asian American Media in San Francisco. The film was also nominated for the Toronto Film Critics Association's Rogers Best Canadian Film Award and the Canadian Screen Awards' John Dunning Discovery Award.

Karen B. K. Chan is an award-winning sex and emotional literacy educator in Toronto, with more than 20 years of experience. Trained in creative facilitation, productive thinking, and non-violent communication, Chan is dedicated to having difficult conversations that are real, transformative, and kind. Whatever the context, Chan finds herself telling stories about being a young and queer newcomer to Canada in the ’80s.
