Historic Supreme Court Verdict on Euthanasia | Harish Rana Case Explained।
In a historic ruling in March 2026, the Supreme Court of India allowed passive euthanasia for 32-year-old Harish Rana, who had been in a persistent vegetative state (PVS) for more than 13 years after a tragic accident.
This judgment is extremely significant because it is the first time after the 2018 Common Cause ruling that a court has allowed the withdrawal of life support even without a “living will.”
Case Background
• In 2013, engineering student Harish Rana suffered a devastating accident that resulted in 100% quadriplegia and a permanent vegetative state.
• For 13 years, he survived through a tracheostomy and PEG feeding tube, while his parents struggled financially and even sold their home to continue treatment.
• Earlier pleas in 2024 before the courts were rejected because he was not dependent on mechanical ventilation.
Landmark Supreme Court Decision
A bench of Justice J. B. Pardiwala and Justice K. V. Viswanathan allowed the withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment, emphasizing dignity and compassion.
Key highlights of the judgment:
• Clinically Administered Nutrition (CAN) and hydration were recognized as medical treatment, not just basic care.
• The ruling directly applies the Common Cause vs Union of India guidelines to a vegetative-state patient without a living will.
• The court stated that continued treatment only prolonged “biological existence.”
• The patient was ordered to be shifted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Palliative Care Centre for a dignified withdrawal of life support.
Why This Case Matters
✔ Major legal precedent for euthanasia in India
✔ Clarifies the withdrawal of feeding tubes as medical treatment
