Lors d’un récent séjour à Londres, je suis tombée nez-à-nez avec Alfredo Piatti.

C’était un moment très touchant, quelques jours après avoir enregistré ce Caprice.

J’aurais pu choisir d’enregistrer plusieurs Caprices d’Alfredo Piatti (1822-1901), tant ses pièces sont magnifiques. Une Anthologie, comme une anthologie de la poésie, implique des choix et oblige à laisser certaines choses de côté. Si j’ai choisi ce « 7e Caprice en do majeur », c’est qu’il est lié avec un souvenir bien particulier : la première fois où j’ai entendu János Starker.

C’était à la Comédie des Champs-Élysées à Paris en 1987, encore étudiante au Conservatoire. Comme à chaque venue de ce grand maître, des essaims de violoncellistes assistaient à son concert dans une grande effervescence. Le programme : Suite n° 3 de Bach, Suite de Cassado, Sonate de Kodaly précédée avant l’entracte par ce Caprice.

J’ai un souvenir très précis de ce moment. De la place que j’occupais tout là-haut, Starker en tout petit. L’écouter et le regarder jouer ce Caprice en bougeant à peine, avec une clarté magistrale… c’était soufflant ! J’ai eu un coup de foudre pour cette pièce. Je possède encore une vieille cassette audio de ce récital qui immortalise ce souvenir.

Depuis ce jour, au fil des ans, j’essaye de résoudre tous les pièges qu’il nous pose : ses accords arpégés dans un mouvement incessant de sextolets, la main gauche perpétuellement sur trois ou quatre cordes, l’ampleur et la régularité de l’archet, la mise en valeur de la ligne de basse, la mélodie des notes aiguës en filigrane, la conduite et les reliefs, l’équilibre entre la fluidité, la virtuosité et cette indication de « Maestoso ».

D’ailleurs, le juste tempo reste pour moi une interrogation… Celui de cette vidéo aurait aussi pu être plus lent ou plus rapide, mais il a fallu choisir !
J’aurais tant aimé entendre Alfredo Piatti le jouer pour avoir un début de réponse !

During a recent stay in London, I came face to face with Alfredo Piatti as I got out of the elevator at the Royal Academy Museum, this magnificent bust was waiting for me:

It was a very touching moment a few days after recording this Caprice.

I could have chosen to record several Caprices by Alfredo Piatti (1822-1901), these pieces are so magnificent. An Anthology, like an anthology of poetry, implies choices and forces one to leave some pieces aside. My choice of this 7th Caprice in C Major is linked with a very particular memory: the first time I heard Janos Starker.

It was at the « Comédie des Champs Elysées » in Paris in 1987. I was still a student at the Conservatoire. Each time this great Master visited, swarms of cellists attended his concerts with great excitement. The program: Bach 3rd Suite, Cassado Suite, Kodaly Sonata preceded before the intermission by this Caprice.

I have a very precise memory of this moment. From where I was sitting, up high, Starker seemed very small! Listening and watching him play this Caprice, barely moving, with masterful clarity : it was breathtaking! I fell in love with this piece. I still have an old audio tape of that recital which immortalized that memory.

Since that day, over the years, I have been trying to solve all the traps Piatti sets for us: his arpeggiated chords in an incessant movement of sextolets, the left hand perpetually on 3 or 4 strings, the fullness and regularity of the bow, the enhancement of the bass line, the melody of the high notes in filigree, the driving force and contrasts, the balance between fluidity, virtuosity and this indication of "Maestoso".

Besides, the right Tempo remains for me a question... the one of this video could also have been slower or faster, but it was necessary to choose!
I would have liked so much to hear Alfredo Piatti play it to have the beginning of an answer!
