As the search for Travis Decker continues, more details are coming to light about the former military man’s declining mental health before his three daughters were found dead.
Decker, 32, is charged with three counts of first-degree murder and kidnapping in connection with the deaths of Paityn Decker, 9, Evelyn Decker, 8, and Olivia Decker, 5, all of whom were found dead at a remote campground in Chelan County, Wash., on June 2, PEOPLE previously reported, citing authorities.

Investigators made the grim discovery after locating Decker’s abandoned white pickup truck. He was not at the scene and has been the subject of an ongoing manhunt, though on June 10, the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office said they had tracked a subject believed to be Decker to the Blewett Pass area near Highway 97 in Washington state.

The sisters, who died by suffocation, hadn't been seen since heading off with their father for a planned visitation on May 30. After the girls were reported missing, the Washington State Patrol issued an endangered missing person alert for the sisters. According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by PEOPLE, the girls’ mother, Whitney Decker, reported them missing to Wenatchee police after Travis did not bring the girls back that night as part of a parenting plan the formerly married couple had in place. She also said he didn’t answer his phone calls. The plan limits Travis’ visitation to eight hours every other weekend and three hours on Fridays, per the parenting order filed in Chelan County court in September 2024, which was also obtained by PEOPLE. The filing also specifies no overnight visits and orders that the visits only occur in the Wenatchee Valley. According to a related court filing, Whitney claimed that Decker had "neglected his parental duties towards a child" and "has a long-term emotional or physical problem that gets in the way of his ability to parent."

Whitney said that she was concerned for the girls because this was a first for Travis, whom she told investigators was “experiencing mental health issues” and was homeless, often living in hotels or campgrounds, per the probable cause affidavit.

The affidavit also outlines Travis’ behavior in the moments leading up to the killings. According to the affidavit, Whitney told authorities that Travis had recently been cited for driving without insurance. Authorities also noted that Travis was involved in a car crash on May 27, to which he was handed down traffic infractions after a police investigation. Travis left the scene of a separate crash on May 4. There was no damage to the other vehicle and the other driver declined a follow up from police, per the affidavit.

Authorities also said in the affidavit that on June 2 — the day the girls' bodies were found — Travis failed to show up to work and his boss noted some "recent mental health concerns."

Whitney's attorney, Arianna Cozart, told PEOPLE on June 6 that Travis' mental health struggles put a strain on his and Whitney's seven-year marriage, which ended in 2022, but noted that he was a good "co-parent."

While speaking to investigators about her relationship with Travis, Whitney denied any domestic violence, but did “mention moments of power or control he used,” per the affidavit.
