JEFFERSON COUNTY/AUSTIN- KFDM News has learned a high ranking judge who was shot outside her home in Austin has strong ties to Jefferson County.
Police said State District Judge Julie Kocurek was shot as she arrived to her home with other people about 10 p.m. Friday night. Officers report she is in stable condition, and though her injuries are serious, they do not appear to be life threatening.
KFDM News learned Judge Julie Kocurek started out in the Jefferson County district attorney's office in the 1990's.
Former district attorney Tom Maness tells KFDM News, "She was one of our top felony prosecutors. She was an excellent trial attorney. Aggressive and fearless. It was a tremendous loss when she moved to Austin. Our prayers are with her tonight."
Longtime Jefferson County assistant district attorney Ramon Rodriguez told KFDM News "She was a very hard worker, extremely sharp and a good lawyer. She was very outgoing and a friend to everyone."
KFDM also spoke with Susan Collins, who served as her secretary in the misdemeanor intake division in the mid 1990's when Kocurek was starting her career as an attorney in that division. She told us she "...was so genuine, a good person, so quick and thorough. We were so shocked to hear what happened and so thankful when they upgraded her condition."
Officers have not made any arrests in the case at this time. Stay with KFDM News on-air and online for the latest in the investigation.
