The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, CON, addressed stakeholders during the National Capacity Building Programme for School Representatives on the deployment of the Nigeria Education Repository and Data Bank (NERD).
In his remarks, the Minister described NERD as a strategic national digital platform designed to secure, digitise and authenticate academic records across Nigeria’s tertiary institutions. The initiative aims to eliminate certificate fraud, strengthen education data governance, and preserve Nigeria’s academic heritage through reliable and verifiable digital records.
Dr. Alausa noted that within four months of enforcement, the platform has already preserved nearly 100,000 digital student submissions, integrated over 250 institutions, and enrolled more than 133,000 students and 6,800 lecturers on the system.
He emphasised that protecting the credibility of Nigerian academic qualifications is critical to building a transparent, digitally verifiable and globally respected education system.
The Minister also highlighted the establishment of the NERD Annual National Laureate Prize, designed to reward outstanding undergraduate, master’s and doctoral research works.
