More proof that there is liquid water beneath the ice cap at Mars' southern pole has been found by scientists, and this may indicate that the planet is geothermally active.
The surface of the ice cap covering Mars' south pole dips and rises, suggesting there may be liquid water below, according to research from the European Mars Express orbiter in 2018.
The presence of substantial water ice caps on Mars's poles is well known to scientists, just as it is on Earth.
The ice caps on the Red Planet, however, were thought to be completely frozen to the ground due to the planet's frigid climate, in contrast to the ice caps on our planet, which have water-filled channels and subglacial lakes below them.
The team discovered a 6.2 to 9.3-mile-long surface undulation by inspecting the topography in the same region where Mars Express took its radar readings.

The team ran simulations of ice flow designed for specific Martian conditions to test this correlation and determine whether the surface undulation of the Martian ice cap could be caused by subglacial water.
There may be subglacial water beneath the southern polar ice cap, according to the combined findings of this simulation, new topography observations of the ice cap, and the 2018 radar results. This finding has more profound implications for the geology of the Red Planet.

The conclusion is that liquid water is present. The water beneath Mars' ice cap must remain liquid, which implies that the planet is still geothermally active.
