What is the SCO? The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) is a Eurasian political, economic and security organization. It covers approximately 60% of the Eurasian landmass, 40% of the world’s population and more than 30% of global GDP.

Originally founded by the “Shanghai Five” of China, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Kazakhstan, the group now has 8 members, including India and Pakistan, as well as multiple observer states and dialogue partners.

The SCO’s activities are primarily centred on security, and Members have held joint war games, and regularly share intelligence.

Straddling the Eurasian landmass, the SCO is well-positioned to play an important role in the global geopolitics and cooperation has been focused on addressing terrorism and separatism.
